High and dry story not good one

Left without goods after store closes

Dianne Pauwells was shocked when Nefco Furniture Ltd. locked its doors and went out of business the very day her new leather couch and chair were to be delivered.

She was doubly mortified when she saw the couch she bought — a floor model that she could identify by a small tear in the back — was sold again to someone else at the store’s liquidation sale three months later. Pauwells had no way of knowing the record-keeping at Nefco Furniture Ltd

Business, people rally to help kids with special needs

0 Comments | Maryland Gazette, Jul 28, 2010

Occasionally, amid hypocrisy and tired political arguments, a story reminds you people can actually be generous and empathetic. The outpouring of support for the Cisco Center is such a story.

A couple of months ago, things were looking grim for the Cisco Center, a small independent school that provides services to developmentally disabled children.

A February fire gutted the home in Severna Park that housed the center, which has since been operating in a small office park in Millersville.

The center was nominated for the TV series “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” and staff spent weeks going through filming and preparing materials. But that fell through in May. And in the same month, the center also found out it would get no insurance money.

Now, thanks to the kindness of strangers – and new friends – things are looking up.

A startling list of people and companies have volunteered time, money or expertise. Among the free or greatly discounted goods and services pledged: a sprinkler system; a security system; architecture, engineering and land surveying services; computers; plumbing; electrical work; floors and carpets; roof shingles; and a heating system.

And ordinary people have given tens of thousands of dollars.

“We kind of have our own extreme makeover going on,” said Cisco Nochera, a retired special education teacher who runs the center along with his wife, Carla, a speech and language pathologist with county schools.

The turnaround started one morning at Cookie’s Kitchen in Pasadena, Cisco Nochera’s regular breakfast spot.

Nochera was showing a newspaper story about the fire to another customer, who called over owner Cookie Kiser and suggested she help out.

Kiser knew nothing about Nochera beyond the fact he came into her restaurant often. But before long, she had organized a spaghetti dinner, silent auction and 50-50 raffle for the Cisco Center. She put signs up in the restaurant and spread the word that the center needed help. In all, she’s helped raise close to $30,000.

“If they don’t deserve this kind of help, who does?” Kiser said of the special needs kids.

Nochera said close to $80,000 worth of donated work has been offered. Still, he said, it will cost $80,000 to $150,000 to rebuild.

Ben Poe, a semiretired builder, has headed up the efforts at Kiser’s request. He is the general contractor, though he laughingly described Kiser as “the queen bee.”

The county has granted a demolition permit, and the top floor is gone. A building permit application is still pending, but Poe said the school’s doors could open 45 days after the county approves it.

Beyond the professionals who’ve offered help, regular people have written checks or volunteered to come help out by painting or doing whatever they could.

Nochera sent out an e-mail appealing for donated school supplies, since the fire destroyed so much.

“We were just inundated,” he said. “We had so much stuff we didn’t know what to do with it.”

The county school system volunteered its warehouse and workers to move and store some of it. The rest is split between the Nocheras’ house, two parents’ homes and a church.

The center got a $2,000 donation from the Christ Child Society, which Nochera had never even heard of. Another check came from an anonymous group of women who pool money to donate to worthy projects

Occupational experiences also play a role. For instance, miners and dockworkers may develop knee OA while farmers have a higher incidence of OA of the hip. Ballet dancers can also develop OA in the feet, ankles, and hips. Athletes also fall into a high risk category with women soccer players being more likely to develop knee OA as a result of prior injury. Other athletic activities which cause joint trauma also can be a trigger for the development of OA.

Obesity is a major risk factor for OA of the hips and knees. The famous Framingham study showed that obese women had the most severe OA. People with other types of arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis or gout are at increased risk for developing OA also.

Probably the most significant risk factor is genetic. Patients with a strong family history of OA are at high risk themselves for developing OA. This is most likely a result of defects in cartilage metabolism which hastens wear and tear.

Shrinking sheep

Shrinking sheep

Science World, Oct 26, 2009 by Katherine Tweed

There’s something odd happening to the Soay sheep on the island of St. Kilda, north of Scotland. Over the years, the sheep have gotten smaller, and scientists believe the reason is climate change.

The planet has been steadily warming in recent decades likely because of increased amounts of gases, such as carbon dioxide, that trap heat near Earth’s surface. These greenhouse gases are released when people burn fossil fuels, like coal and oil, for energy. The increase has led to warmer winters in many places, including St. Kilda. Once, bigger sheep had a better chance than smaller ones of surviving the long, cold months on St. Kilda. Now, due to milder winters, size is not as important.

Overall, the sheep have shrunk in size by about 5 percent in the past 20 years

Because of all the confusion, I suggest avoiding soy protein altogether and sticking to the other types listed.

Protein Blends

are generally a combination of several types of protein blends such as whey protein concentrate, whey protein isolate, egg protein, casein protein, and soy protein. Why would you want a blend anyway? You will receive the full spectrum of proteins and you will receive varying rates of absorption from the different types of protein.

Whey hydrolysates

(also known as hydrolyzed whey protein, and are also called peptides), are powerful proteins that are more quickly absorbed; more so than any other form, since your body prefers peptides to whole proteins. Hydrolysates are produced through very low heat, low acid and mild enzymatic filtration processes, (those highest in the essential and the branched chain amino acids) and are potentially the most anabolic for short-term protein synthesis such as 15 minutes prior to a workout, during a workout and immediately after a workout.

Whey Protein Versus Whey Isolate:

Most whey protein powders that stock the supplement shelves are made up of whey concentrate and mixed in with a small portion of whey isolate.

As U of Md., Baltimore opens doors to BioPark Building Two, work

Daily Record, The (Baltimore), Apr 1, 2008 by Robbie Whelan

The second research facility at the University of Maryland, Baltimore’s BioPark opened its doors Monday to a diverse group of tenants, ranging from large biotech firms to community-oriented job training programs.

Mayor Sheila Dixon, Gov. Martin O’Malley, U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin, Rep. Elijah Cummings, and UMB President David J. Ramsay were at the ceremony, which included a symbolic groundbreaking for Building Three, now under construction on a Baltimore Street lot facing the parking garage.

The first BioPark building opened in 2005 on the 800 block of West Baltimore Street, along with a 638-space parking garage. Less than a year after its ribbon-cutting, Building One was fully leased to several large biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, including SNBL Clinical Pharmacology Center Inc., Alba Therapeutics Corp., FASgen Inc., and the University of Maryland Center for Vascular and Inflammatory Diseases. It now has about 200 employees.

BioPark Building Two, at six stories and 238,000 square feet, is twice as spacious as the first facility, and hosts a diverse array of tenants that ranges from Gliknik, Inc., a cancer treatment developer, and health research firm Westat Inc., to Baltimore City Community College’s Bioscience Institute, and a job training center run by Goodwill Industries.

The structure was built much more quickly than university officials expected.

“At the beginning, we did a feasibility study that said that it would be three or four years for every building, and here we are with three buildings up in that time,” said James L. Hughes, vice president of research and development at UMB.

Funds for the second BioPark building were raised almost entirely from private sources by Wexford Science and Technology, the project’s developer

I cancel the picture created by the expression, “no pain, no gain.” I challenged the subscribers of the DailyAffirm List to participate in a campaign to replace the phrase, “no pain, no gain:”

“I know that if we all put our hearts and heads together we can arrive at an expression that is just as cute and catchy as “No pain, no gain.” ……One that is empowering rather than disempowering.”

The idea was to develop an expression that describes
learning and/or growing and/or development
with and/or through
joy and/or fun and/or enthusiasm.

I further challenged them to develop a phrase that is

…SHORT

……EASY TO SAY

………MEMORABLE

…………POSITIVE

……………EMPOWERING

The JoyPhrase Campaign included a contest that ran through June, 1996. This is the vision of the campaign:

“The phrase we are looking for is so wonderful that advocates of ‘no pain, no gain’ willingly adopt the new phrase and let go of this devastating idea that the only way to advance is through pain.

Prevent a Wet Basement. Call Your Basement Contractor to Learn How to Defend Against Invading Water. by Rebecca Paul
in Home (submitted 2010-07-14)

There is no reason to put up with a wet basement when there are so many options available for quality basement and foundation waterproofing. Contact your local foundation contractor today to learn which system is best for your home and get on the road to a dry basement!

Have you recently noticed that your basement is doing its best impression of Venice? Don’t be embarrassed. Wet basements can happen to anyone. Hydrostatic pressure from your soil can sometimes force water into the seam where your basement walls meet the slab and old, cracked foundation walls can let water bleed through. Luckily, your local basement contractors will be able to set you up with an amazing defense system to waterproof your basement.

One way to provide quality basement waterproofing is to install a sump pump. Available in tandem with a French drain system or on its own, a sump pump collects the water that has crept into your basement and pumps it out of your house
